National price ranges
Fixr: $1,700 to $5,000, average $3,000 for a 10 ft modular aluminum ramp. Angi: $100 to $250 per linear foot installed.
When it is worth it
- Someone uses a wheelchair or scooter, or a walker on steps is already a struggle.
- There is room for the full length at a 1:12 slope (or a switchback with landings).
When to try something else first
- The rise is over about 30 in and the yard is small: a vertical platform lift may fit better.
What moves the price
- Total rise and therefore length, plus a 60 in level landing at the top and bottom.
- Modular aluminum (fast, removable) versus built wood or concrete (permanent).
- Railings on both sides and edge protection.
- Permits: many towns treat a permanent ramp as a structure.
DIY or hire it out
Rubber threshold ramps are DIY: measure the threshold height and buy a ramp rated for that rise. Full ramps are best left to a pro who can check slope and landings.

Where this shows up in the home check
Keepstead suggests this fix when one of these checks fails. Run the home check to see whether it is a priority for your home.
- The door threshold is low (½ in or less) or beveled (entrance and steps)
- At least one entrance can be used without climbing steps (entrance and steps)
Frequently asked questions
How long a ramp do I need?
Measure the total rise from the ground to the door sill in inches; that number in feet is the minimum ramp length at 1:12. Add level landings of 60 in at each end.
Does a home ramp need handrails?
The ADA benchmark calls for handrails on both sides of any ramp run that rises more than 6 in, a clear width of at least 36 in, and 60 in landings.
