How much does it cost to add a stair handrail?

Handrails on both sides of every staircase is the first stair item on the CDC and NIA checklists. A second rail means the stronger hand always has something to hold, going up and coming down.

When it is worth it

  • Any staircase with a rail on one side only.
  • Entry and deck steps, which often have none.
  • Rails that stop short of the top or bottom step.

What moves the price

  • Length and turns of the staircase.
  • Wall type and stud positions for brackets.
  • Exterior rails: posts, footings and material (aluminum, wood, steel).

DIY or hire it out

Wall-mounted interior rails are a manageable DIY job if you can hit studs; set the top of the rail 34 to 38 in above the step nosings and keep it continuous for the full flight.

Tax note. IRS Publication 502 lists this among home changes that usually do not raise a home's value, so the cost can count as a medical expense if you itemize and total medical costs pass 7.5% of adjusted gross income:

The ADA benchmark is 34 to 38 in above the stair nosings, at a consistent height for the whole flight.
